The Commonwealth

The translation should be ‘Union of Nations’; previously it was Britain Union of Nations (Commonwealth of Nations). We are speaking about an association of 54 sovereign countries, which belonged to former British colonies; most of which are or at some time were ruled by Britain. They are and some were once united by historical bonds and common interest. The head of the association is the Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom ‘symbol of free association of its members’.

The Commonwealth is present in our five continents and with almost two billion people, which covers a fifth of the world population.

The Commonwealth does not form a Constitution but a ‘Declaration of Principles of the Commonwealth’, whose members recognize how important the democracy is as well as good government, respect for human rights and laws, equal rights between men and women and sustainable socioeconomic development. For the non-observance of these ‘Principles’ there have been several countries, which no longer belong to the association due to violations of human rights.

As an anecdote, the traffic take left way in all these countries following the example of the United Kingdom, except in Canada and Belize.

THE ANGLICAN CHURCH

The Anglican Church has its origin in the break which occurred with the Roman Catholic Church in 1534, when the Pope Clement VII refused to declare the annulment of the marriage of Henry VIII to Catherine of Aragon, as the king was determined to marry Anne Boleyn. Since then the king proclaimed himself the Supreme Head of the Church of England.

The Holy See only recognized the Anglican Church when Anne Boleyn’s daughter, Elisabeth I was crooned queen. She reigned from 1558 until her death in 1603.

It is based in Canterbury and nowadays it maintains the same liturgical principles of its foundation, although it is considered full part of the Christian Church as it declares to be Catholic and Reformed. The Dean Henry Forrester defined it as “Catholic but not Roman and Evangelical but not Protestant”.

WIMBLEDON CHAMPIONSHIP

This tournament of tennis takes place in the London district of Wimbledon over two weeks. It is one of the four Grand Slam tennis championships, which are held in different countries all over the world. It is the third after the Australian Open and the French Open (Roland Garros). The US Open is the last one. It is the only one which is still played on grass. One of its traditions includes a strict dress code for competitors – both women and men must play in white.

Since it began being held in 1877 (no tournaments were held during the first and second world war) several Spanish tennis players have won this Championship such as Manuel Santana who beat the American Dennis Ralston in 1966, Rafael Nadal who playe a fantastic and unforgettable game with the Swiss Roger Federer in 2008 and later the Czech Tomas Berdych in 2010. In women Conchita Martinez won the final game against the American (born in Czech Republic) Martina Navratilova in 1994.

THE TOWER OF LONDON

If you go to London and enjoy sightseeing it is essential to visit the castle, which has worked as royal residence, armoury, fortress and prison throughout the British history.

For nearly one thousand years the Tower of London filled the subjects of the kingdom with dread, because it was the place where those who dared to oppose the monarch where locked up. They were tortured and lived in substandard conditions. They knew they wouldn’t leave the town alive. They were executed on the nearby Tower Hill.

The Tower of London is steeped in history. You shouldn’t miss the Crown Jewels, the white Tower or the Tower of London with its most famous residents- the crows. The legend says that if these black birds disappeared one day, the Tower would collapse to the ground and break into pieces.
