THE BRISTISH MUSEUM
The British Museum is located in London, and its collections are dedicated to the human culture, including history, archaeology, ethnography and art.
It began being a private collection, consisting of 80,000 art objects given to the British nation, in will, by the Irish doctor and naturalist Sir Hans Sloane, in 1753.
His collection consisted of about 40,000 books, 7,000 manuscripts, drawings by Dürer, a collection of Natural History and medicine, as well as antiquities from Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Ancient Near and Far East and America.
The museum was opened to the public in the mansion Montagu on 15 January, 1759.
Later, as the collections has increased, and the museum building was no longer big enough, a plan for expansion was set up. Then, today´s museum started to be constructed in a neoclassical style, on the same site.(1852-1857)
The British museum houses more than 7 million works on the history of human culture from its beginnings to the present, most of which are not displayed. They remain there but in the basement, since there is no vacant space for them and even for the collection of Natural History and the British Library. Because of that, it is considered a museum of antiquities, nowadays.
There have always been endless controversies over the way the most notable collections were acquired. (the same as the Musée du Louvre) Some institutions use the word `plunder´, and a lot of countries which were `plundered´, often ask the British authorities for restitution of their treasured objects.
