English Christmas traditions

December 25th or Christmas Day is the most important day for the English. On this day the youngest and not so young, open the gifts that Santa Claus or Father Christmas (as they call it in the UK) has left in the socks under the Christmas tree. In England, the Christmas tree was popularized by Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, who introduced this custom from his country- Germany- in 1841. Christmas Day is a typical family day on which the English usually eat roasted turkey with Yorkshire pudding, Christmas cake or Christmas pudding, which is a cake made with nuts. In addition to the usual wine and beer, liqueurs or mulled wine- a type of hot punch- are drunk.

Before eating, traditional Christmas Crackers, small cardboard tubes wrapped in wrapping paper and linked together, never miss out. Crackers contain a wreath of onion paper, a gift and a joke. The custom is to pull them between two people until it explodes and splits in two. The person who gets the biggest part is the one who keeps the content.

Sending Christmas cards is a typical English tradition. Before the Christmas of 1843, Henry Cole decided, instead of writing a letter for each of his friends, to print a card with a common message. He never imagined that his idea would become so popular all over the world, and that´s why the UK go on sending and getting more than 200 million cards at Christmas.

On Christmas Day, at three pm, many Britons listen to the Queen’s Christmas speech on television.

Christmas nights without the mistletoe would not be the same, as it brings good luck to homes. Other Christmas symbols are holly and ivy.

December 26th is Boxing Day. Traditionally boys from the shops in each town asked for money at Christmas. They went from house to house on December 26th and took boxes made of wood with them. At each house people gave them money. This was a Christmas present. So the name of December 26th doesn´t come from the sport of boxing- it comes from the boys´ wooden boxes. Now, Boxing Day is an extra holiday after Christmas Day.

Royal Mail

ROYAL MAIL

If you have been to the United Kingdom, you have surely seen the famous red postboxes. They are a symbol in the UK, recently privatized by the British government, stating that it was necessary for the company to be private, so that the restructuring, essential for its survival, could be achieved. Why was this absolutely essential? Because lately, due to the new technologies, sending letters has fallen into disuse as those, who were used to sending letters, can send an email, twitt…etc.

The Royal Mail is one of the most famous British landmarks. It was founded by Henry VIII, in 1516. In fact it is called `Royal´ because it had been at that king´s service until 1635, when Charles I made it available to the public.

The government has required the Royal Mail to guarantee the maintenance of the universal service; this means that items-letters and parcels- can be sent to any location within the UK for a fixed price, not depending on the weight, size or distance. You just pay the same if you send something to your neighbour or to somebody in the depths of Scotland.

The Royal Mail is the typical example of public welfare because part of the service, which is profitable (the delivery of items in places with high density of population such as London), pays the loss in other sectors of the service. The aim of the company is to provide citizens with a service, not to make a profit.

Remembrance Day

REMEMBRANCE DAY

Remembrance Day is celebrated on II November each year, in honour of British soldiers and civilians (also the Commonwealth) killed in the war, and then London is covered with red poppies.

Originally the Remembrance Day began being a special day to commemorate the end of the First World War, the Great War, as the human race had never seen anything similar. It was remarkably cruel because it was the first war without banners, nice uniforms, in the absence of a king and barons leading the battle and making history. Over 16 million people-civilians and soldiers- were killed and 20 million wounded.

It is said that, when the soldiers left, the battlefields were covered with red poppies, as if the flowers had been stained with innocent blood.

Obviously, these poppies had bloomed in those fields for a long time before the arrival of human beings with their cruel meanness.

In 2014, the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the Great War was celebrated, and thousands of red poppies made of porcelain were planted in the moat of the Tower of London.

Charles Dickens

CHARLES DICKENS

CHARLES DICKENS

Charles Dickens, whose full name was Charles John Huffam Dickens, was born in Portsmouth, England, on 7 February 1812. We are speaking about a famous English novelist, one of the most well-known in the world, regarded as the greatest writer of the Victorian period. He was the master of the narrative genre, and his writing style was marked by some kind of humour and satire. However, in his autobiographical novel, David Copperfield, we can see an acute social criticism, and sometimes a formal style-a mixture of fantasy and realism- because his tough childhood experiences had a strong literary influence on his life as a writer.

His novels and short stories were very popular while living, and even today they are often published and adapted continually for the screen.
Dickens wrote novels in instalments, the usual format for fiction then, which made the stories cheap and accessible, as only few people could afford to buy a book. Even so, each new episode was awaited with considerable enthusiasm by British and worldwide readers. Dickens was and goes on being considered a literary celebrity by writers all over the world.

He died on 9 June 1870, and he was laid to rest in the Poets´Corner of Westminster Abbey. A printed epitaph circulated at the time of his death, which read- `He was a sympathizer with the poor, the suffering and the oppressed, and by his death, one of the English greatest writers is lost to the world! ´

THE TOWER BRIDGE

The Tower Bridge is the most famous suspension bridge in the world- it is a combined bascule and suspension bridge. It is next to the Tower of London, from which it takes its name and it is often mistaken for London Bridge, the next bridge upstream.

It is maintained by the Bridge House Estates, a charitable trust overseen by the London City Hall.

In the second half of the 19th century, the increased commercial development in the East End of the city led to a requirement for a new river crossing downstream of London Bridge. The traditional fixed bridge could not be built, as it would cut off the access to the Port of London, which was between London and the Tower of London.
Horace Jones, then the City architect, submitted the design of the bridge, which was opened in 1894.

It is 244 metres long and 7 metres wide with two towers, each 65 metres high.

The original hydraulic system is still in use but the pressurized water has been replaced by oil and the steam engines and the accumulators replaced by electric motors.
