Este dramaturgo, poeta y actor, al que también se le denominaba en ocasiones como el Bardo de Avon, pues había nacido en Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare es considerado como el escritor más importante en lengua inglesa y uno de los más celebres de la literatura universal, y es generalmente reconocido en el Reino Unido como el más grande escritor de todos los tiempos y figura única en la historia de la literatura.
Autor de un gran número de obras inmortales, tanto tragedias, comedias como obras históricas, las cuales se representan en teatros de todo el mundo, se han producido no menos de 250 películas basadas en sus textos, así como series para televisión, siendo la obra más veces llevada a la pantalla Hamlet, con 61 adaptaciones al cine y 21 series de televisión.
Nació en abril de 1564 en día no determinado y murió un 23 de abril de 1616, y en su tumba figura el siguiente epitafio, que según la Enciclopedia Británica habría compuesto el propio Shakespeare:
“Buen amigo, por Jesús, abstente de cavar el polvo aquí encerrado. Bendito sea el hombre que respete estas piedras y maldito el que remueva mis huesos”.
Una leyenda afirma que las obras inéditas de Shakespeare yacen con él en su tumba, aunque nadie se ha atrevido a comprobar la veracidad de la misma, tal vez por miedo a la maldición del citado epitafio.

This respectable poet and playwright was born in April 1564 (the day is unknown), and died on 23 April 1616, at the early age of fifty-two.
According to the Encyclopedia Britannia, Shakespeare would have written this epitaph on his grave ´Good friend, for Jesus’sake forbear to dig the dust enclosed here. Blessed be the man that spares these stones and cursed be he that moves my bones´.
A legend says that Shakespeare’s unpublished works lie with him in his tomb, although nobody has dared to verify if it is true, perhaps for fear of the curse of that epitaph.
